Free Legal Clinic for Creatives

  • NODE Hub, CD101, Enterprise Centre, Cordukes Lord Mayor's Walk York, England, YO31 7EX United Kingdom (map)

How confident are you in navigating the world of intellectual property, contracts, and disputes with clients?

• Do you know who owns the copyright on the work you create for your clients?
• If your client takes your work and repurposes it without asking, are you within your rights to ask for more money?
• Are you able to use a piece of work you’ve made for one client and repurpose it for another client?

To get the answers to these valuable questions and more, come along to our legal clinic on Thursday 21st March with Crombie Wilkinson.

This free clinic will run from 6pm to 7pm at the NODE Hub Workspace at York St John's Enterprise Centre. It is open to all, but you must reserve a ticket.

Please view this map to find the Enterprise Centre on campus. When you arrive at Cordukes we are in room CD101, which is up the stairs to your left. Please note, unfortunately we do not have lift access.

Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors has acted for numerous clients in the creative sector over the years, including writers, theatres and artistic production centres. Their Managing Director, Duncan Morter, is a music graduate, he writes and records songs, runs a choir, directs musicals and he plays in three different bands - so they understand the landscape.

Duncan and Crombie Wilkinson solicitor Elizabeth Sugden will be present to deliver a short talk talk helping creatives think through the key points to consider when starting out as a freelancer or small business owner, and answer any questions you may have about your rights and responsibilities.

About Crombie Wilkinson:

We could tell you about the legal services we offer across our 4 offices for businesses and private individuals, our 100 people available to support you, our awards and accreditations - but we won’t, as we would rather tell you about what our law firm does differently for clients.

At Crombie Wilkinson we have a client centred value, which means our clients are proactively cared for.

To do this we make a promise to all our clients - in fact 3 promises:

1. The first is that they can always call us to discuss any queries, concerns or a potential new matter. If that requires proper legal work we give intelligent pricing options, not just an hourly rate.

2. The second promise is that we put them on a secure platform, making sure they have 3 essential protections in place – a Will, LPA for health and welfare and LPA for property and affairs. This saves clients potential stress, cost and delay in the future.

For business owners, as well as ensuring that your business can continue to operate smoothly in the event of your incapacity or death, our Platform will also safeguard your interests by making sure you have the right employment contracts, terms and conditions, shareholders or partnership agreements, property documents and credit control systems in place.

3. And we give a service pledge promise, meaning that we will give a great service, every lawyer every time.

We back that up with live feedback during the case, asking our clients how we are doing. We love getting great feedback, but we also want to know early on if there is an issue so we can deal with it quickly and efficiently to get the matter progressing.
